Welcome to the support page

Here you can read about the differences between the RJ12 and RJ45 customer ports and how to identify them.

You can also see how to connect Samla to different types of electricity meters, see Electricity Meters below.

Port Information - P1 vs RJ12 and HAN vs RJ45

The customer port on the electricity meter where Elveta Samla is connected comes in two different variants. It can be the smaller RJ12 connector or the wider RJ45 connector. Unfortunately, the naming of these connectors is not clear, as the names P1, H1 and HAN may be used interchangeably for the same connector.

The connector of type RJ12 is often called a P1 port, but sometimes it can also be called a HAN port or H1 port.

The connector of type RJ45 is almost always called a HAN port, but other names may occur.

The connector type varies between different countries. Norway has almost exclusively RJ45, Finland has almost exclusively RJ12 and Sweden has a mix of RJ12 and RJ45.

To find out which port you have, make sure to look at the width of the connector and not the name of the port. If you have a network cable, you can try plugging it in (without connecting the other end). If it fits, your meter has an RJ45 connector. If it does not fit, your meter probably has an RJ12 connector. If it is difficult to see, please feel free to send us an email with a picture of the electricity meter and we will try to help you.

RJ45

RJ45 connector with 8 pins. Also used for network equipment (but with a different cable).

RJ12

RJ12 connector with 6 pins. Previously used for landline telephone sockets.

RJ10

RJ10 connector with 4 pins. Previously used for landline telephone handsets.

But Which Port Is Fastest, RJ12 or RJ45? (for nerds)

Here we need to distinguish between data speed and data frequency, as well as which data is delivered in each message. Elveta Samla supports all data speeds and data frequencies.

Data speed

The RJ12 port is clearly the fastest at sending data from the electricity meter after the energy data has been sampled. The data speed is almost 50 times higher than for the RJ45 port.

Data frequency

Data frequency is about how often the electricity meter sends data. RJ12 ports send data at least every 10 seconds but can send as often as every second. For example, Ellevio in Stockholm sends every second. However, the most common interval is every 10 seconds.

The RJ45 port also sends data at least every 10 seconds. In Sweden almost never more often, but in Norway it is most common for it to send more often, for example every 2.5 seconds.

Data content

Regarding the content of each message, RJ12 works so that all parameters are sent in each message, meaning every 10 seconds or more often. The RJ45 port in Sweden also sends all parameters in each message every 10 seconds, but not more often. The RJ45 port in Norway, on the other hand, only sends parts of the data parameters in each message, which makes certain types of analysis more limited. A complete message with all information from the electricity meter is only sent once per hour on the RJ45 port in Norway.

Electricity Meters

Elveta Samla supports most types of electricity meters. Below is a description of how Elveta Samla is connected to different electricity meters. For information about how RJ12 and RJ45 ports are usually named, see Port Information above. Please note that for all connections below, the cable must be from Elveta in order to work. Use the list below as a guide for which cable you need for your electricity meter.

Aidon 6525 / Aidon 6534 / Aidon 7534

Aidon comes with either an RJ12 or RJ45 port. Elveta Samla supports both with different cables. Aidon RJ12 is used, for example, by Skellefteå Kraft, Tekniska Verken, Halmstads Energi and Kalmar Energi in Sweden. Aidon RJ45 is used, for example, by Norrtälje Energi and Härryda Energi in Sweden and Elvia AS in Norway.

Above the rubber cover named "HAN" there is a model designation that indicates whether the port is RJ12 or RJ45. You have RJ12 if it says: 6442, 6490 or 6492. You have RJ45 if it says: 6474, 6476, 6477, 6479 or 6484.

Kamstrup OMNIA® e-meter

Kamstrup OMNIA® e-meter comes with an RJ12 port. Used, for example, by Göteborg Energi and Herrfors in Finland.

Kamstrup Omnia e-meter

Kamstrup OMNIPOWER®

Kamstrup OMNIPOWER® has an internal port that can be used without an external power source in two ways: either through the dedicated Elveta Samla K, which plugs directly into the electricity meter, or the versatile Elveta Samla with an Elveta Adapter plugged into the electricity meter.

Elveta Samla K supports third-party P1 dongles (RJ12) via its expansion port.

P1 and HAN adapters from Kamstrup are also supported, but these require an external power source. Kamstrup OMNIPOWER® is used, for example, by Jämtkraft, PiteEnergi, Luleå Energi and Gävle Energi in Sweden.

Activate the Customer Port

The customer port, sometimes called the local interface, is inactive when you move in and activation must be requested from the electricity network provider. This is most often done by logging in to My Pages at the electricity network provider, where you activate it with BankID, but sometimes there is a form to fill in and sometimes you need to call. Check with your electricity network provider to get the latest information about how it should be done. Below are instructions for some electricity network companies.

E.ON

At E.ON you can activate the customer port yourself on My E.ON or in E.ON's app under My agreements. You can also contact E.ON customer service for help with activation.

Ellevio

At Ellevio you can activate the customer port yourself. For private individuals, follow the steps below.

  1. Log in to My pages for private customers
  2. Once logged in, go to "Electrical Installation" on the left side.
  3. Scroll down to the heading "Services".
  4. Click the "Activate" button next to the text "Local interface for real-time metering".
  5. It normally only takes a few minutes before the port is activated.

For companies, go to Energy Data after you have logged in to My pages for companies.

Jämtkraft

At Jämtkraft you can activate the customer port yourself by filling in the form here. The form includes a choice of port, RJ12 or RJ45. We recommend choosing RJ12 for the fastest data speed and best real-time experience.

Kalmar Energi

At Kalmar Energi you need to contact their customer service to get help with activation, phone 0480-45 11 45.

Mälarenergi
